“Boys Will be Boys”

Boys will be boys. It’s such a crazy cop-out. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard it, but it rankles with me.  So many excuses for the bad behaviour of boys and men, is put down to “Boys will be boys”, as if it’s ok.

I heard it in relation to the death of a boy on his motor bike.  He hit a tree and died.  Many folks including his parents apparently had regularly reminded him about wearing a helmet, but he chose not to.  “Boys will be boys”.

Boys are a lot more adventurous than girls/women.  They happily do some crazy things that they seem to think is ok, because of their gender.

I’m not saying women are perfect.  I know there are some that choose to take a lot of risks too, but nowhere on the same scale as men.  This article in the Huffington Post is interesting.

Just watch a program like RBT on television.  I think it is about 9:1 – I’m only guessing but for every 9 men that are caught drink driving there might be one female.

Watch the drivers around you when you go out on the highway.  Is it the women who are generally driving above the speed limit?  Winding in and out of traffic in an unsafe manner?  No, it is the blokes.

What about the graffiti on the railway fences?  Is it girls?  I think not.  Males mostly.  Interestingly there are girls who are graffiti artists.  It is about the art, and gender is not an issue.  Though in the art world girls are not as accepted as artists as guys are.  This article may be of interest.

I certainly am aware of the gender bias against females in the workforce, in the artistic world (writers, painters, etc), and generally all around.  But I don’t like it that there seems to be an excuse for boys doing dangerous things, or breaking the law, and people saying “boys will be boys”.

Male, female, I don’t care.  We should all take our laws seriously.  There should be no excuse.  Boys maybe boys, but they can’t use that as an excuse to break the law.
