Sunflowers (UBC5)

Doesn’t everyone love Sunflowers?

I was brought up around gardening. My mother was a great gardener, though mostly she grew fruit and vegetables. She did have some flowers growing, but my recollection of them has drifted away. I do recall roses, and I think gerberas. I have always loved gardening too, and for a few years, our family had a commercial gerbera business.

I digress. This is about sunflowers. When did I see my first sunflowers? I don’t remember, but it was only a few years ago that I “fell in love” with them. Bright, yellow, sunny, happy flowers.

Recently they have become more popular – bunches of them can be purchased in the supermarket, and we can frequently see images of them. I suspected that they weren’t easy to grow.  I think I was wrong!

The Sunflower Festival

Last year when I learned about the Sunflower Festival at Kalbar, a town about 88 km from where I live. I planned to go, but it was postponed at short notice (because the weather had affected the plants and the flowers were not blooming!)  I went to Kalbar anyway, but there was nothing much to see.

How I grew Sunflowers.

After I was disappointed at missing the festival, as the later date didn’t suit me, I bought a packet of sunflower seeds. A few weeks ago, I planted some seeds – in two plastic pots, and it wasn’t long before they started to grow. And grow.

The Blooming Sunflowers

The pots are near the front door of my unit, and so many people stop and look at them as they pass by.  I think I am going to become addicted to them, as I still have some seeds left, and as it is still fairly summer, I will plant some more this week.

About to bloom

The Kalbar Sunflower Festival

We are all hoping that weather events will not interrupt the festival this year. It is on from March 17th to 26th. More information is here. I plan to go this year. I will go armed with my cameras and see what images I can collect! It’s in the diary now.

More Planting

Meanwhile, I will prepare to plant more seeds in my garden and will also share seeds with family and friends. They are not expensive, and I will be happy to share.

Do you or would you grow Sunflowers?
