Mango Season – Who doesn’t like a Mango?

Mangonificent!  Not an easy word to pronounce.  But Mangoes are magnificent.  And it is Mango Season in Australia now.  They are in the supermarkets for around $1.50 to $2 each, but I had a friend invite me to pick some from a tree not far from here.

She and I wandered around picking up the undamaged ones from under the tree.  One needs a ladder to get to the ones still clinging to the branches of the tree!

Two Bags of Mangoes

My friend gave me a plastic bag, and she had one, and we both wandered like emus picking up the appropriate fruit.  There were plenty.  When we had filled the bags, she handed me the one she filled.  I hadn’t realised that I was to get two bags of mangoes.  Most were smaller than the supermarket sized fruit, but still smell and taste the same. I was thrilled to get so many mangonificent mangoes.

Preparing Mangoes for Freezing

It was quite a messy job, but I prepared the mangoes and put them in bags to freeze.  I have quite a supply of frozen pieces – ready for smoothies or other recipes.

I used a glass to scoop the flesh from the cheek of the mango. I have a dozen or so bags of frozen pieces now – will last me a long time.

This video shows how to use a glass to easily get the fruit from the cheek.

I also like dried mangoes – while I am not going to use any of these fruits to prepare for drying, I will probably do so in the next few days with several from the local fruiter. I have had a dehydrator but can use my own to prepare these Mangonificent fruit.
